  17. <p>Operation Rescue is handed a victory by a divided Supreme Court
  18. </p>
  19. <p>     No group has vexed the Pro-Choice movement as much as
  20. Operation Rescue, which has staged passionate demonstrations in
  21. front of abortion clinics and tried to block those entering.
  22. Faced with local officials who deemed such protests legal,
  23. abortion-rights advocates turned to the federal courts. There a
  24. number of judges were willing to restrain Operation Rescue
  25. through an 1871 federal civil rights law originally designed for
  26. use against the Ku Klux Klan. Women seeking abortions, the judges
  27. ruled, deserved the same protected status as blacks.

  29. <p>     By a 6-to-3 vote, the Supreme Court last week rejected
  30. that argument. The decision will result in more activism by
  31. Operation Rescue. "God be praised," said leader Randall Terry.
  32. "The most potent weapon the child killers had against us was the
  33. illegal use of the federal judiciary." Pro-choice Representative
  34. Charles Schumer and Senator Edward Kennedy immediately proposed
  35. bills making it a federal crime to block abortion clinics.
